How it is calculated
Towns: crimes per 1,000 inhabitants per year from the Ministry of the Interior's Crime Report. Madrid districts: the Ministry does not break them down, so the city rate is shared out according to Municipal Police activity in each district and adjusted with how safe residents say they feel in the City Council's Quality of Life Survey.
Scores are indicative: they summarise public data and are no substitute for visiting the area.
