Getting to know Vicálvaro
Vicálvaro is one of the former towns annexed to Madrid that best retains its village character. The historic centre preserves squares and churches at a tranquil neighbourhood scale that contrasts with the peripheral new developments. The PAU of El Cañaveral, in full expansion, contributes new construction blocks, planned parks and modern amenities that have attracted a profile of young residents and first-time families. The Rey Juan Carlos University campus adds a notable student presence to the district.
Green spaces are a strong point of Vicálvaro: the parque del Cerro Almodóvar and the green spaces of El Cañaveral offer broad surfaces for outdoor leisure. Day-to-day life for basic services is covered in the main cores, though the retail and dining offer is limited. Nightlife is practically non-existent: the district has no nightlife axis and residents must travel for this type of activity.
Transport is the district's most critical point. Metro line 9 (Vicálvaro, San Cipriano, Valdebernardo) and Cercanías towards Atocha partially cover the district, but the connection to El Cañaveral is deficient and many areas are only accessible by car or low-frequency bus. The journey to the centre can exceed 45 minutes by public transport.
Vicálvaro suits first-time buyers or renters on tight budgets, families seeking new-build floor space with some greenery, and students linked to the URJC campus. Safety is relatively good for its price. Having a car is an indispensable condition. It is not viable for those who depend on public transport or who value an active urban daily life.
